Quote of the Lesson (दिन के उद्धरण)

“A man who dares to waste one hour of time has not discovered the value of life.”

“ऐसा व्यक्ति जो एक घंटे का समय बरबाद करता है, उसने जीवन के मूल्य को समझा ही नहीं है.”

“Failure is success if we learn from it.”

“यदि हम असफलता से शिक्षा प्राप्त करते हैं तो वह सफलता ही है.”

“A wise man's question contains half the answer.”

“एक बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति के प्रश्न में भी आधा उत्तर छिपा रहता है.”

“Wise thinkers prevail everywhere.”

“विचारशील व्यक्ति को हर जगह सम्मान मिलता है.”

“Who then is free? The wise man who can command himself.”

“इस दुनिया में कौन आज़ाद है? ऐसा बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति जो स्वयं पर नियत्रंण रखता है.”

Technical word (तकनीकी शब्द)

bandpass filter
A bandpass filter is an electronic device or circuit that allows signals between two specific frequencies to pass, but that discriminates against signals at other frequencies. Some bandpass filters require an external source of power and employ active components such as transistors and integrated circuits; these are known as active bandpass filters. Other bandpass filters use no external source of power and consist only of passive components such as capacitors and inductors; these are called passive bandpass filters.

banner
Depending on how it's used, a banner is either a graphic image that announces the name or identity of a site (and often is spread across the width of the Web page) or is an advertising image. Advertisers sometimes count banner "views," or the number of times a banner graphic image was downloaded over a period of time.

barnacle
In a computer, a barnacle is unwanted programming, such as adware or spyware, that is downloaded and installed along with a user-requested program. The term derives from the name of a crustacean that attaches itself to whales and boats, among other things. Like its marine counterpart, the computer barnacle can be difficult to eradicate.
Barnacles usually fall under the category of potentially unwanted programs (PUPs), a euphemistic term coined by McAfee to refer to programs that a user installs unintentionally, perhaps having unknowingly consented to their download.

Bandwidth
The range of frequencies, expressed in Kilobits per second, that can pass over a given data transmission channel within a frame relay network. The bandwidth determines the rate at which information can be sent through a channel – the greater the bandwidth, the more information that can be sent in a given amount of time. Usually measured in bits-per-second. A full page of English text is about 16,000 bits. A 56Kbs modem can easily move 16,000 bits in less than one second.

Beta Software
Beta versions of commercial software are work-in-progress test copies released prior to the full version. They’re used to put the product through real-world tests and to ferret out bugs before the finished software hits the shelves. Betas often expire after a period of time, usually when the full version or the next beta is released.

Blog
A blog is basically a journal that is available on the web. The activity of updating a blog is “blogging” and someone who keeps a blog is a “blogger.” Blogs are typically updated daily using software that allows people with little or no technical background to update and maintain the blog. Postings on a blog are almost always arranged in cronological order with the most recent additions featured most prominantly.

Certificate Authority
An issuer of Security Certificates used in SSL connections.

CGI
(Common Gateway Interface) - A programming language used to convert data gathered from a web page into another form. A CGI program might turn the content of a feedback form into an email message, or search a server's database with user-entered keywords.

cgi-bin
The most common directory to store CGI programs on a web server. The "bin" part of "cgi-bin" is an abbreviation of "binary", dating back to when programs were referred to as "binaries".

ClariNet
A commercial news service dedicated to a wide range of topics that provides tailored news reports via the Internet. You can access ClariNet news within Usenet newsgroups.

Client or Server
Computer technology that separates computers and their users into two categories. When you want information from a computer on the Internet, you are a client. The computer that delivers the information is the server. A server both stores information and makes it available to any authorized client who requests the information.

Compression
Data files available for upload and download are often compressed in order to save space and reduce transfer times. Typical file extensions for compressed files include .zip (DOS/Windows) and .tar (UNIX).

Cyberspace
This term was coined by author William Gibson in his novel Neuromancer. Cyberspace is currently used to describe the whole range of information available through computer networks.

Call-back
This service, initially offered in competition to established public telecommunication operators, is now increasingly part of a PTO services. Call-back can potentially offer substantial savings to consumers. Most US-based call-back services rely on uncompleted call signalling systems. This type of call-back service solicits pre-subscribed customers in a foreign country to dial a US telephone number and, after a certain number of rings, to hang up. The US call-back company then initiates a call to the foreign telephone number and when the foreign caller answers, he or she receives a US dial tone from the switch at the reseller's US location. The customer can then place a call in the United States or to a foreign destination. The customer does not pay the US carrier or the foreign carrier for the initial uncompleted call. In contrast, other call-back services provide foreign customers a US dial tone by using the foreign carrier's outbound service to establish an initial connection with a reseller's call conferencing unit. That unit then redials the calling party's number, thus requiring the foreign caller to pay for the initial call. Alternatively, inbound international freephone numbers (‘800’) can be used to establish a connection to the resellers US facility. In such cases the foreign caller only pays the call-back provider for the second US call and the reseller recoups the cost of the inbound international ‘800’ number from its charges for this second call.

Carrier
A company or organization which provides public telecommunications services. This terms is used synonymously with public telecommunication operator.

Cache
Cache, which is pronounced "cash" (not "catch" or "cashay"), stores recently used information so that it can be quickly accessed at a later time. Computers incorporate several different types of caching in order to run more efficiently, thereby improving performance. Common types of caches include browser cache, disk cache, memory cache, and processor cache.

CamelCase
CamelCase (also "camel case" or "dromedary case") is a naming convention in which the first letter of each word in a compound word is capitalized. Examples include the video game "StarCraft," the band "FireHouse," and the company "MasterCard." The term "CamelCase" itself incorporates the CamelCase naming convention. While CamelCase has many applications, in computing, it is most often used in programming languages and website names.

Camera RAW
Most digital cameras process and compress the pictures you take immediately after capturing the image. This can be helpful, as it keeps the file sizes low (using JPEG compression) and takes care of color correction, including white-balance, tint, and exposure, so you don't have to. However, some people, such as professional photographers, prefer to have more control over how each image is processed. Therefore, many high-end cameras have the ability to shoot in RAW mode. This mode does not compress the images at all and leaves them completely unprocessed.

CDMA
Stands for "Code Division Multiple Access." CDMA is a wireless transmission technology that was developed during World War II by the English allies to avoid having their transmissions jammed. After the war ended, Qualcomm patented the technology and made it commercially available as a digital cellular technology. Now CDMA is a popular communications method used by many cell phone companies.

Clean Room
A simple definition of this would be "the opposite of my bedroom." But technically speaking, a clean room is a highly purified and regulated room for producing equipment sensitive to contamination. For example, the production of microprocessors is done in a clean room, since the smallest amounts of dust could create flaws in their production. Therefore, the air in a clean room is constantly filtered. Other aspects such as temperature, humidity, and pressure may be regulated as well.

Clock Speed
Clock speed is the rate at which a processor can complete a processing cycle. It is typically measured in megahertz or gigahertz. One megahertz is equal to one million cycles per second, while one gigahertz equals one billion cycles per second. This means a 1.8 GHz processor has twice the clock speed of a 900 MHz processor.

CMYK
Stands for "Cyan Magenta Yellow Black." These are the four basic colors used for printing color images. Unlike RGB (red, green, blue), which is used for creating images on your computer screen, CMYK colors are "subtractive." This means the colors get darker as you blend them together. Since RGB colors are used for light, not pigments, the colors grow brighter as you blend them or increase their intensity.
Technically, adding equal amounts of pure cyan, magenta, and yellow should produce black. However, because of impurities in the inks, true black is difficult to create by blending the colors together. This is why black (K) ink is typically included with the three other colors. The letter "K" is used to avoid confusion with blue in RGB.

Cold Boot
To perform a cold boot (also called a "hard boot") means to start up a computer that is turned off. It is often used in contrast to a warm boot, which refers to restarting a computer once it has been turned on. A cold boot is typically performed by pressing the power button on the computer.
Both a cold boot and warm boot clear the system RAM and perform the boot sequence from scratch. However, unlike a cold boot, a warm boot may not clear all system caches, which store temporary information. Additionally, a cold boot performs a "power on self test" (POST), which runs a series of system checks at the beginning of the boot sequence.

Column
A column is a vertical group of values within a table. It contains values from a single field in multiple rows.
In databases, columns may be defined as individual fields within a table. Each field has a name, such as Name, Address, or Phone Number. Therefore, when multiple values from a column are selected, they will all have similar information, such as a list of phone numbers. When defining columns in databases and spreadsheets, it is often possible to specify the type of data, such as a string, number, or date. This helps ensure all the data within a given column has a similar format.

Common Mistakes To Be Avoided (आम गलतियों को टाला जा सकता)

Beside Besides

It is easy to confuse ‘beside’ and ‘besides’, but they are not one and the same thing. ‘Beside’ is a preposition, whereas ‘besides’ works as both a preposition and an adverb, and although ‘ besides’ is sometimes used in place of ‘beside’, they have distinct meaning.

‘Beside’ means ‘by or at the side of’. For example: He stood beside his new car proudly.

As a preposition, ‘besides’ means ‘in addition to’ or ‘ apart from’. For example: What are you working on besides the research project? As an adverb, it means ‘ furthermore’.As in, ‘ He was not selected because he did not have a good grasp of his concepts. Besides, he did not seem very keen.’

As mentioned above, the distinction between the two words is sometimes ignored. ‘ Besides’ can never mean ‘at the side of’, but ‘ beside’ is often used in place of ‘ besides’. This can lead to misunderstanding, though; the sentence‘There was no one beside him in the hall’could mean that ‘ he’ was all by himself, or that there was no one next to him.

This definitely appeals to the lazy-bones (lazy people) among us! These learning websites are dedicated to studying English and always keep the needs of ESL learners in mind. Englishtown, for example, offers live online lessons with native English-speaking teachers, and you don't even have to get out of bed to come to class! There are also text and audio chatrooms for students from around the world to get in touch. And unlike other online chat rooms, you won't get flamed (criticised) if you make any mistakes.

You can also practice your English by watching movies with transcripts of the dialogue and tips on idioms and colloquial phrases. Not feeling up to a formal lesson? You can try out language games, read your daily horoscope, or enter a contest to test your English!

Many of these sites have free services and lessons, as well as a free trial period. So no matter whether it's your schedule, location, money, or just plain laziness that's keeping you from studying English, online learning is a great solution that's just a click away.
